Unleashing The Innovators: How Mature Companies Find New Life with Startups
by Tom Post
Hardcover – 15 September 2017
RRP $59.99
Today’s mature, established companies must find ways to rejuvenate themselves–or risk losing their way. By working with startup companies, legacy companies can acquire new technology and lines of business, relearn the need for speed, increase strategic risk-taking, spark innovation, improve the intimacy of their relationships with customers, and streamline their operations from within.
Former global marketing officer for Procter and Gamble and business consultant Jim Stengel saw firsthand the importance of establishing partnerships and learning key insights from the startup world. In an eye-opening book, he looks at such established companies as GE and Western Union, Wells Fargo and IBN, Target and Motorola Solutions, Toyota and Bayer to see what they are learning from their alliances with entrepreneurs and startups–as well as the potential pitfalls and course corrections when a partnership goes awry.
Jim closes by looking at how 10, 20, and 30-year-old “startups” like Microsoft, Google, and Apple are reinventing themselves–and what that bodes for legacy companies everywhere.
Reviews

“Entrepreneurial imagination, enthusiasm and vision is core to startup success, and Jim Stengel teaches us it’s just the prescription for reinvigorating larger legacy companies as well. Unleashing the Innovators can help managers harness this startup spirit to reenergize their companies and take them ‘from old to bold.'”
-Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook COO
“Fact: the business world is changing and changing fast. We have two options, learn from Jim Stengel or get left behind. With an open mind, a willingness to trying something different and a copy of Unleashing the Innovators in hand, executives at legacy companies can adapt the cultures to more effectively compete in a new generation.”
-Simon Sinek, Optimist and New York Times Bestselling author of Start With Why and Leaders Eat Last
About the Authors

JIM STENGEL was the global marketing chief for Procter and Gamble, where he worked for over 25 years. In 2008, he left to form Stengel Consulting, working with companies to build brands and grow their business. He is the author of the acclaimed business book Grow.

Tom Post has spent more than three decades as a journalist. He has written and edited stories about Fortune 500 companies and dynamic entrepreneurs while at Fortune and Forbes, where he spent 17 years as a managing editor and running a digital channel. He has also covered foreign news and politics at Newsweek and general news at ABC World News Tonight, one of three writers for Peter Jennings. Tom’s first home was in academics: He received a Ph.D. in English literature from the University of California, Berkeley, and taught English at Berkeley and Vassar College.
After leaving Forbes in late 2014, Tom started working for SnappConner PR of South Jordan, Utah, where he serves as senior vice president of content, working with clients on thought leadership stories and teaching writing through an in-person and online course he developed. And he has thrown himself back into journalism as a top editor of Forbes Finland and Forbes Latvia and a mentor to young reporters there—all possible because of the miracles of Skype, e-mail, and WhatsApp.
Unleashing the Innovators is Tom’s first book, produced in collaboration with Jim Stengel, the former Global Marketing Officer for Procter & Gamble. Over two years, Tom and Jim traveled to dozens of companies around the country, large and small, to report on an exciting new trend: Having lost their way—failing to innovate and excite their customers—mature corporations are galvanizing themselves by partnering with charismatic startups. These legendary companies are not just gaining a critical technology or a more digitally savvy incarnation; in the best of circumstances, they are exploiting these new relationships to remake themselves within. This can be a tough and sometimes frustrating process for them—sometimes two-and-a-half steps back for every one forward. But it’s been rewarding to see so many smart, dedicated people on both sides of the partnership come together in earnest common cause to help each other.
Tom lives in Chappaqua, N.Y. with his wife Peggy, a pastel artist, and their one-eyed cockapoo, Ginger. They have two daughters: Suzanne, a singer with the Lyric Opera in Chicago, is married and expecting her first child in February 2018; Julia teaches 3rd grade at the Ethical Culture Fieldston School in New York City and is getting her master’s in education at the Bank Street School.
