This book is a dramatic survey encompassing three thousand years of history and legend concerning a small portion of land called Mount Moriah. It is more popularly known as the site of Solomon’s Temple and of the Wall. Situated within the old city of Jerusalem, the site is sacred to three great religions – Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

According to biblical tradition, King David purchased Mount Moriah from Ornan the Jebusite and built an altar there dedicated to the God of the Hebrews. Since then there has been a persistence of holy places on the mount. Here were the famous temples built by Solomon, Zerubabbel, and Herod the Great. Christian churches were built there in the era of the Byzantine empire, and again during the Crusaders’ rule in Jerusalem. Caliph Omar built the beautiful Dome of the Rock there to mark the place from which Mohammed ascended to paradise.
Today the site is often the focal point of dispute whose origins can only be understood through knowledge of the past. Historical records and recent archaeological findings are interwoven with legend – yet never confused – to help illuminate the present conflicts. The text is enhanced with informative maps and illustrations.
